Growing up in the depths of Cornwall I had a very nieve childhood,
something like how Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five' were depicted. A
lot of playing outside, bike rides, going on adventures, finding
animals to make friends with in fields along the way, packed
lunches, and trips to the seaside. It is here that I learnt to use
my imagination to create my own fun.
I love where I grew up but as I grew older, I sought opportunities
to grow as a person and as a professionl; which seemed much more
plentiful up North. So I went to university near Liverpool, got a
BA Hons degree in Drama and moved to Manchester to make my way in
the world.
Mind you, at this point, I didn't really know what I wanted to
pursue and my only recollection of 'what do you want to be when
you grow up?' and actually having an answer was as a child (...I
wanted to be a mermaid, for the record).
Permanently moving up north was the beginning of greater things
but my career has certainly taken a few turns. A 180° for a moment
there, when I had to go back to hospitality work.
However, eventually after plenty of temping and several roles with
regulated services, I found my way to Bupa as a DesignOps
Executive. Here I have discovered work I really care about and
something that seems to come quite naturally to me.
It is in this creative space, in the Experience Design Team, that
I found a landscape of roles that I finally found a direction with
my career. I have yet to find my specialism but this is what I
think my next few years at work will be about. Taking on coding
courses with SheCodes, attending conferences, reading articles and
books as well as attending a design thinking course, has been an
effort to acelerate that specialism more actively.
